Ceasefire Agreement

In the pursuit of a negotiated solution to the conflict, the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) signed the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) on 22 February 2002. The document is signed by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

With the overall stated objective to find a negotiated solution to the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, the Parties entered the ceasefire. As an integral part of the CFA, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) was set up to enquire into violations of the agreement as well as assisting the Parties with implementing the clauses stipulated in the CFA. The SLMM Head of Mission (HOM) is designated by the Parties to constitute the final authority on the interpretation of the CFA.

In spite of the conflict escalating gradually, the CFA continued to remain in function until in January 2008, when it was abrogated by the Government of Sri Lanka.
