22/12/06 - Abduction of 23 students and 2 teachers on 18 December 2006 in Amparai district

In general SLMM does not comment on individual cases in the media. However, in this particular case SLMM feels the need to clarify the following:

Referring to the abduction of 23 students and two teachers in the Amparai district on Monday 18 th December, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) would like to state the following:

            • LTTE has claimed the responsibility for this incident.

            • LTTE has, according to the CFA point 1.2 a) constituted a violation of the CFA.

            • SLMM visited the school where the abduction took place, on Wednesday 20    

            December.

            • SLMM has received a formal complaint from the families.

            • SLMM has been in contact with the families throughout the week.

            • SLMM has liaised with the local police regarding the matter.
